create despite fear

The head route-setter at my local climbing gym’s first off-the-cuff response to seeing a highly regarded crusher under-respect a new route and fall off the second move—a V4 that had been set for the Youth Climbing team with the first set of wooden holds I thought were good enough for others to climb on—was, “Punish the Strong!”

I’ve never forgotten that moment: the look of begrudging respect from the climber, the smile of the route setter, and the rush of relief I felt knowing that people actually wanted to climb on my holds.

But they didn’t just want to climb on my holds. They had to rewire their expectations of what a hold could be—and what it could feel like on their hands and feet. They kept coming back to that route, and then to the next route I set a few weeks later.

Now, you have the chance to do the same with your climbing experience.
